Even though I’ve been blogging for nine months, I’ve never done a post about who is Oatmeal Runner (beyond what’s on my about page) so today I thought I’d share my running journey.
I’ve said this in previous posts but I had several starts and stops before I completed Couch to 5K for the first time. I tried it several times during college but never made it through to the end. Add I never worked out much during college (as evidenced by how heavy I was) beyond spin classes from time to time. It wasn’t until I moved to the Twin Cities for my job in December 2011 that I got my first gym membership. And it would be another couple of years before I really got into running.
But I got into working out with that gym membership, I had regular workout classes I went to and it made me feel better mentally and physically. During that time, I met my husband and we started dating and then moved in together. In the spring after we moved in together was when I decided to give running another shot. Little did we know what we were in for!
I finished Couch to 5K and we decided to sign up for the TC 5K in October 2014. I kept on running through the summer, using the Zombies Run app and got more excited about running. I think it was right around that first 5K that I decided to train for my first half marathon. Originally, I was planning on running on in fall 2015 but on December 30 I signed up for the Stillwater Half Marathon in May!
Mike showed no interest in running any further than a 5K with me but he was (and still is) super supportive during training for my first half marathon. We were also doing a 5K series with Twin Cities in Motion during the year (with February, March and October 5Ks) so he didn’t get out of running altogether. We ended up adopting Vinnie the Tuesday before my first half, no idea what we were thinking but luckily he was good about sleeping through the night! Vinnie and Mike (along with my parents and their puppy Indy) cheered me along at the Stillwater Half and I was in love with distance running!
After running the 5K series, I wanted to try out one of Twin Cities in Motion’s other race series. I ended up deciding on the Loony Challenge, which was the 10K, 5K and 10 miler over marathon weekend. I also ran two half marathons that spring and a 10 miler in September. Of course, as you would know from a previous post, it was doing the Loony Challenge that pushed me to train for my first full marathon. After saying since that first half marathon that I’d never run a marathon.
And, if you’ve been reading the blog since April, you know that I cut back on my racing schedule in 2017 to focus on my marathon training. I had a half marathon in May (eight days before Mike and I got married!) and then I started training for Twin Cities Marathon at the end of May. Mike is still running 5Ks with me (our next race together is the Valentine’s Day 5K) and being super supportive not only with my training but now the blogging too!
What else do you want to know about me (running or otherwise?) Let me know in the comments!
