Since I’ve already declared it handknit sweater season as of Thursday, I’m already thinking about fall running. I run outside year-round (as much as the weather allows) but fall is my favorite season for running. As much as I love the feeling when it first gets warm enough to run in shorts after a long winter and when it’s light enough during the summer for 5 a.m. runs, there’s nothing quite like fall running.
Fall running in Minnesota means the perfect running weather. It’s cool enough that I’m not drowning in my own sweat and caked with salt after a run but warm enough that I can continue to wear shorts. There’s also no humidity so I don’t feel like I’m slogging through at what normally is an easy pace for me. It’s why I love fall racing (and feeling some serious FOMO about not having a fall race on the calendar). The weather is perfect to get a PR and after training through the summer heat, it’s so much easier to go fast but have it feel easier (or at least easier).
Fall is also the anniversary of so many of my running first. My first 5K, 10K, 10 mile, 20 mile and marathon all took place during the fall. It’s so amazing to see the pictures from right before my first race coming up in my TimeHop app (which was the TC5K in October 2014) and remember how hard running felt at that point. And now, I’ve run two marathons and loved it after struggling with getting up the courage to race my first 5K. Years of on and off with Couch to 5K and now 5K is an easy distance and one that’s fun to push myself at to get some extra speed in.
My final reason why I love fall running is how gorgeous it is in Minnesota. The fall colors, even though they don’t last at peak for that long, are amazing to see as the trees start to turn colors and then for a short amount of time are at peak blaze. I’m especially excited to do some trail running and hiking as the trees start changing colors so I can be surrounded by all the fall colors!
