December and 2018 Running in Review

Instead of spreading this across two posts, I’m going to combine my December and 2018 running recaps into one quick post!

I finished off December strong with my last race and just over 70 miles. Between the weather and holidays at the end of the month, my runs got shorter as I was listening to how my body felt while running. I still got in four runs a week during the holidays but nothing longer than four miles.

Overall, 2018 was an awesome year of running for me. I hit multiple PRs, mixed up my training and tried out trail running! I also took a break from race training over the summer which was the first time I haven’t been training over the summer. It was really strange but also freeing to not feel forced to run in the heat and humidity.

My average pace also went down 45 seconds from 2017 to 2018, not surprising that I had multiple PRs this year! Even though my pace is currently slower (although it’s around my average pace for 2018) I know I have the strength to run fast!

2019 is looking to be a year of change and that includes in my running. It’s exciting and scary knowing what’s coming and what is going to be changing.

January 2019 Goals

Instead of setting goals for the entire year, I’ve decided to set break it and set monthly goals. This will give me more flexibility, especially as we get further into 2019, and focus on different areas in my life through the year. So let’s check out my goals for January!

Daily Meditation

I don’t think I meditated at all in December and I’d really like to get back into the habit. I’ve also found a new app (Insight Timer) which has a ton of free, guided meditations which I think will really help me get back into the habit. Since I wasn’t paying for Calm, I only had the timer meditations which weren’t guided and I found it hard to focus.

Finish Three Books

My goal for 2019 is to read 36 books, which is up from the 27 books I read in 2018. I already have three books I’m partially through from the library (that I’m on the waitlist for so I can finish), plus I have a couple of books currently checked out and the fourth book in the Wayward Children series comes out next week. So I’m confident I’ll be reading at least three books this month!

Get Back to Foam Rolling Post-Run

Another thing I’ve been slacking on is foam rolling after runs, my foam rollers might be collecting dust bunnies and I can feel the difference in my body. So I’m getting back on track with a quick foam rolling session after every run!

Try Three Recipes from Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow.

Mike got me Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow. and I’m really excited to try some new recipes! Of course, if I didn’t make this a goal, I might not crack open the book for a while. So I’m going to try at least three recipes from it in January. Some that have piqued my interest are:

  • Beet Blueberry Molasses Superhero Muffins

  • Sweet Potato Waffles

  • Mediterranean Hummus Wrap

  • Veggie Lover’s Pasta Salad

  • Burger Salad Bowl

  • Creamy Ginger Cashew Sauce

  • Ginger Molasses Cookies

Weekly Workout Report: December 24-30

A busy week of celebrations meant some shorter runs and moved around workouts. Combined with very icy sidewalks over the weekend meant I spent a lot of time on the treadmill without any runs outside. Let’s get into it!

Monday, December 24

3 miles ~ 30:42 ~ 10:13 min/mile

Tuesday, December 25

Since our hotel doesn’t have a gym, I used the NTC app to get in a quick bodyweight HIIT workout in before continuing the Christmas celebrations! I love this app for my everyday strength training but it’s so nice to have a workout on hand when I’m traveling too.

Wednesday, December 26

3 miles ~ 31:20 ~ 10:25 min/mile

Nice easy treadmill run to ease into the post-Christmas workouts! Yesterday was a long day with lots of traveling but it felt good to get a run in today.

Thursday, December 27

Soggy and rainy outside (which will freeze overnight 😱) but I got in a good weight and cardio session at the apartment gym!

Friday, December 28


Roads (and sidewalks) are icy so I stayed at home for cardio at the apartment gym and yoga at home. Looks like my weekend runs will be on the treadmill as well

Saturday, December 29

2 miles ~ 20:56 ~ 10:26 min/mile

Just a quick and easy two miles on the treadmill this morning!

Sunday, December 30

3 miles ~ 31:13 ~ 10:23 min/mile

Another easy three miles on the treadmill, I'm hoping the ice is cleared by next weekend so I can get some runs in outside!
